5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
Artifact: Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis
Reflection:
The Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis was completed to determine the current condition of technology integration in my school. In this artifact I analyzed my school’s use of technology to ISTE’s Essential Conditions. For each of the conditions I found the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The results from the artifacts could later be used to help drive a school technology plan. This artifact was completed with help from academic coaches, administration, and teachers taking a needs assessment survey.
This artifact demonstrates the mastery of the standard because a needs assessment survey was conducted prior to completing the analysis. This survey helped best determine where faculty and staff were and what they needed. This helped make an effective plan for the school.
Completing the SWOT analysis taught me how to analyze my schools needs in reference to technology. I feel that if I could have changed something, I could have went more in depth with the needs assessment that the factuality and staff took. It helped me learn more about the needs and wants of my staff members when it comes to technology as well. I was able to see the strengths and weaknesses of my schools staff members and of the way technology is used in the school. This analysis helped me determine the direction technology is going at Russell and the direction that Russell has the potential to go with technology. Before sharing this information with others or making decisions, I would make sure I had feedback from more staff members and I would make sure I had feedback from administration and our current part time technology specialist. If I had to make changes I would also look deeper into my schools weaknesses and strengths, so that I can provide more opportunities for my school.
This artifact helped with school improvement because it showed the direction that the school was going in regards to technology and helped show what can be improved with technology in the school. This artifact can be assessed through surveys. These surveys can happen each nine weeks or twice a year. It should be assessed enough so that changes can be made to help with improvement and to help determine what is and is not working.
