2.6 Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 2.6/ISTE 2f)
Artifacts: Online Learning Experience
Reflection:
The OLE project in ITEC 7481 meets this standard. This artifact consisted of taking the OLE Unit Plan from the previous course and creating the course in an LMS that could be implemented during ITEC 7482. For this artifact an LMS was chosen first. For example I chose Edmodo. Throughout the semester the artifact was built on. Items such as the syllabus, modules, resources, parent information, student rights, videos, readings, activities, etc. were added through out the semester. By the end of the semester there was an available course ready for students to participate in. In the course the students have to give students a variety of ways to gain information and reflect on their work and the work of others. As the instructor I had to use what I knew about the students to create appropriate assignments and means of gaining information.
When building the LMS used and building the material to go in the LMS, the candidate had to use what was learned previously about designing and what is appealing, engaging and appropriate. The candidate also had to use best practices and judgments to ensure that they were building a LMS that would be appropriate for the students in the course and to be sure that they would meet the needs of those students.
This experience taught me that creating an online course to implement is not as easy as it looks and although preparation for an online educator is different than one of a tradition classroom teacher, there’s a lot more that goes into creating than I thought. I also learned that I can’t just throw words or material in an LMS, there is research that helps online teachers appropriately organize, “decorate”, and build the online course. If I could go back and change anything it would be taking more time to make sure that I used more of a variety of best practices in my building of my LMS to prepare for implementing the course with students.
This artifact impacts Student learning. The way the artifact is build and the use of research- based practices increases the impact of student learning and helps the instructor meet the needs of their students.
