2.1 Content Standards & Student Technology Standards
Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences aligned with student content standards and student technology standards. (PSC 2.1/ISTE 2a)
Artifact: Online Learning Experience
Reflection:
The Online Learning Experience in ITEC 7481 met this standard. This artifact consisted of taking the OLE Unit Plan from the previous course and creating the course in an LMS that could be implemented during ITEC 7482. For this artifact an LMS was chosen first. For example I chose Edmodo. Throughout the semester the artifact was built on. Items such as the syllabus, modules, resources, parent information, etc. were added through out the semester. By the end of the semester there was an available course ready for students to participate in.
This artifact meets the standards because it required candidates to look at student technology standards and content standards to create an engaging unit and turn it into an online course or blended course. The candidate had to first familiarize him or herself or already be familiar with the content standards being used to know what materials to pull for the course. The candidate had to also understand student technology standards to make sure that student online needs were being met and to ensure that the students were improving/ developing their online learning skills through the course.
This artifact taught me what goes into creating an online course. Prior to this course and completing the artifact, I did not understand how much went into effectively creating an online course. Creating this course forced me to constantly go back and look at technology standards to make sure that I was meeting al my students’ technology needs. If I could change one thing, I would familiarize myself better with my LMS so that I could go above and beyond with the material and activities for my students. To complete the artifact I just made sure that I made the requirements, because I was learning the artifact as I went.
The work from this artifact impacted student learning. I used this artifact as a way for my students to get extra practice in the area of science. Sometimes social studies and science content gets pushed to the back burner or gets minimal attention in the classroom due to the many standards required for students in reading, writing and math. Making this artifact made it where students could go home and have additional time to practice and gain understanding of some of their science standards.
